Breaking Through: MMSP CP 102 NDJV Achieves Tunnel Breakthrough Milestone
D.M. Consunji, Inc. (DMCI), as part of the Nishimatsu-DMCI Joint Venture (NDJV), successfully achieved tunnel breakthrough on September 14, 2026, for the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) Contract Package 102 (MMSP CP 102- covering Quezon Avenue Station, East Avenue Station, and their connecting subway tunnels, spanning approximately 3.1 kilometers across Quezon City).
The breakthrough was achieved when the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) broke through the concrete diaphragm wall of the Quezon Avenue Station which was purposely constructed using fiberglass rebar instead of conventional metal rebar. This design choice made sure that the TBM cutterhead would not sustain unnecessary damage during the breakthrough process - part of the meticulous engineering and planning behind the project.
Subsequently, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Romualdez. Marcos Jr., paid the Quezon Avenue Station a visit to see for himself the pioneering accomplishment at the site.
The breakthrough-making southbound tunnel started from the south-end of the North Avenue Station (NAS), stretching approximately 1.12 kilometers to the Quezon Avenue Station, thereby successfully connecting the said Stations.
In attendance during the event were Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd. (Philippine Branch Office) General Manager Keiji Matsushita, MMSP CP 102 Project Director Osamu Iwata; DMCI SVP for Project Partnerships Rebecca E. Civil; DMCI Operations Director Dwight A. Ta-ala; and MMSP CP 102 Deputy Project Director Reynaldo T. Lazaro.
The breakthrough, the first one in the MMSP, shows NDJV's unwavering commitment to precision, innovation, and safety in delivering critical infrastructure for the Filipino people. The successful connection between North Avenue and Quezon Avenue Stations brings the MMSP one step closer to completion, strengthening the team's dedication to building a modern and efficient transportation system for our country.
Connecting Valenzuela City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City, the MMSP will reduce travel time from over 1 hour 30 minutes to approximately 41 minutes once fully operational. It consists of 17 stations along its 33.1 kilometers alignment.
