Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter “Marubeni”) and D.M Consunji, Inc. (hereinafter “DMCI”), one of the largest engineering-based construction companies in the Philippines, have been awarded the Manila LRT Line 2 East Extension Project, an electrical and mechanical (hereinafter “E&M”) package for a 4km railway system extension with 2 additional stations eastwards (hereinafter “Project”) for Department of Transportation of the Republic of the Philippines. The contract value is equivalent to approximately 6.9 billion Japanese Yen, or 62 million US dollars.

Marubeni, as consortium leader, will be responsible for overall administration and the procurement of E&M railway systems, while DMCI will be responsible for procurement & installation of track-work and E&M installation. DMCI is the contractor for the LRT Line 2 East Extension’s viaduct and two additional stations – Emerald and Masinag. As the two stations are nearing completion, Marubeni and DMCI will be working together on the track-work, signalling, telecommunications and other electrical requirements of the new LRT Line 2 East Extension.

The current Manila LRT Line 2, which was awarded to Marubeni in 2000 and completed in 2004, is a 13.8km elevated metro line with 11 stations connecting east and west; Marubeni was responsible for the procurement of E&M systems, including track-work and new rolling stock. The Project is one part of the “Capacity Enhancement of Mass Transit Systems in Metro Manila Project”, which has been financed with JPY43.2 billion of Japanese governmental Yen-Credit, and it will contribute to reducing both traffic congestion and air pollution, which are particularly severe problems in Metro Manila.

Marubeni has an excellent track record in the Philippines in many railway system and installation projects including the Improvement and Modernization of Commuter Line South Project, the Metro Manila Light Rail Transit Line 1 Capacity Expansion Project – Phase 1 and Phase 2 Package B, and the Metro Manila Light Rail Transit Line 2 Project - Package IV. Utilizing its vast experiences, as well as know-how acquired through execution of this Project, Marubeni will further contribute to social and economic growth in the Philippines by participating in more railway and infrastructure projects in the near future.
